On the occasion of Upstate Art Weekend, Gloria's presents Means of Approach, curated by Azikiwe Mohammed of The Black Painters Academy. Featuring work by Mary Blakemore, Gail Larroca, Nicky Lesser, Mariana Rodriguez Dal Pra, and Day Sinclair, Means of Approach explores the richness of traditional modes of making while casting our gaze toward new possibilities.
The Black Painters Academy is a space for thinking, currently housed at 5 Eldridge Street in New York's Chinatown neighborhood. They seek to offer painting and painting–adjacent classes, free of charge, to anyone who needs more thinking space / is looking for the object-based experiential joy that can come from making a yes object. Every other Thursday The Black Painters Academy operates the New Davonhaime Food Bank, a food pantry serving Chinatown, the Lower East Side, and the FDR Houses from 10am to 12pm or until food runs out. Donations to The Black Painters Academy can be made here.
Upstate Art Weekend is a connective annual event for residents and tourists alike that celebrates the cultural vibrancy of Upstate New York. The fifth edition of UPAW will take place Thursday, July 18, through Sunday, July 21, 2024, spanning ten counties in the Catskills Mountains and Hudson Valley.
Located in the heart of Newburgh’s Downtown East End Historic District, ADS Warehouse is a ferry ride away from Beacon, 90-minute car ride from Manhattan, 1.5-hour train from Grand Central, or quick bike ride down Liberty Street. Also on view during Upstate Art Weekend, ADS Warehouse will host Earthlings, featuring work by Corinne Beardsley and Sludge Thunder.
